Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma embarked on a historic three-day visit to Bhutan, receiving a warm welcome at Paro Airport from Bhutan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, H.E. Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel. Invited by Bhutan’s King JigmeKhesarNamgyelWangchuck, Sarma attended the nation’s 117th National Day celebrations and participated as a state guest in the festivities.
The visit included a series of significant engagements, including the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in Thimphu, where Sarma met with Bhutanese Prime Minister TsheringTobgay. The two leaders discussed opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as energy, healthcare, tourism, and skill development, particularly in light of Assam’s proximity to Bhutan. The summit was graced by the presence of King Wangchuck.
In a post on X, Sarma highlighted the strategic partnership between Assam and Bhutan, stating, “We are presented with numerous opportunities, including the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City.” He emphasized Assam’s role in furthering the historic bond between the two nations. Guwahati stands to benefit significantly from this strengthened bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, tourism, and energy sectors, which will open up new avenues for economic growth in the region.
