A team of doctors at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, the first Proton Therapy Centre in South Asia & the Middle East successfully performed 2 complex and complicated surgery on a patient at same time. India’s first of its kind Mega prosthesis Fixation for femur (thigh bone) and Laparoscopic Radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous kidney as a single stage surgery through a Multimodal approach on a 54-year-old woman, giving her a new lease of life.
The woman from Assam had sustained fracture of her left thigh bone and suffered with a trivial injury two months ago and was completely bedridden. To evaluate her condition, she visited Apollo Proton Cancer Centre where a biopsy was done. Her report confirmed that she had a 4th stage kidney cancer and cancer cells travelled to the thigh bone. As a novel attempt, both the procedures were completed in 6 hours. The knee joint containing the Tumor was removed with wide margins and replaced with mega prosthesis. The patient also underwent a laparoscopic Kidney removal using Keyhole surgery. After the procedure the patient was mobilized the very next day and made to walk after almost three months.
