Coca-Cola, in partnership with the ICC and United Way of Mumbai, has launched a project focusing on waste management during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The initiative aims to achieve ambitious targets such as 100% global recyclability of packaging by 2025, a minimum of 50% recycled material in packaging by 2030, collecting and recycling a bottle/can for every one sold by 2030, and fostering community engagement to nurture a cleaner, debris-free environment. Over 1000 volunteers have been deployed across the ten stadiums during the tournament, educating spectators on proper waste segregation, and ensuring waste is correctly sorted into designated bins.
Coca-Cola India aims to recover about 200 metric tonnes of waste, which will be used to create benches in host cities. To ensure a sustainable sporting experience, Coca-Cola India has launched #MaidaanSaaf, which includes RVMs at stadium touchpoints for fans to responsibly dispose of their PET bottles. The initiative also introduces National Flags and ICC Unity Flags made from post-consumer PET bottles.
Chris Tetley, Head of Events, International Cricket Council (ICC), said, “We are fostering community engagement, proper waste segregation, and the promotion of a cleaner, debris-free environment. This endeavor is a testament to our dedication to a greener future and a sustainable sporting experience.”
