A senior police official reported that a US citizen was detained in this district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday while attempting to enter Nepal using forged passport and visa credentials.
American citizen Eric Daniel Beckwith, 64, was detained by the immigration department in the Sonauli area early in the morning after his visa papers and passport were discovered to be fake, according to immigration officer Shabbir Kumar at the Sonauli checkpoint. Beckwith was travelling from India to Nepal at the time.
Sonauli, which is in the Maharajganj district and is situated on the India-Nepal border, serves as a popular transit location between the two countries.
