Amazon India has launched Aurora, a program aimed at leveraging the unique talents of individuals with learning disabilities and providing meaningful, sustained employment. The program, which began with a pilot with Sol’s ARC, a non-profit organization in Mumbai, has already employed over 35 associates at Amazon’s fulfillment center, sortation center, and delivery station area. Amazon India plans to onboard more people with learning disabilities this year. The program also focuses on building groundwork and support mechanisms, such as increasing employee awareness and inspiring employees to be allies to those with learning disabilities.
Amazon India’s Director – HR Operations, Liju Thomas, emphasized the company’s commitment to a diverse workforce, stating that it aims to create a more inclusive environment and provide opportunities for underrepresented groups, reflecting the company’s diverse customer base.
Existing employees will be trained to gain sensitivity towards this cohort, and Amazon India will learn and use existing global practices to meet the needs of employees in India. Listening sessions will be conducted with associates to understand their feedback and ensure appropriate interventions are made to drive positive experiences. Amazon India also runs various programs for diverse underrepresented cohorts, including people with learning disabilities, women, military veterans, and people from the LGBTQIA+ community.
