Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has secured Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licences under two new standards, becoming the first steel manufacturer in India to receive the All India First BIS Licence for IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 for hot-rolled quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plates, sheets, strips and wide flats. The company has also secured a BIS licence under IS 19210:2025 for pre-painted Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) alloy coated steel strip and sheet.
The certifications are expected to expand domestic availability of specialised steel for infrastructure, defence, heavy engineering and industrial applications, while supporting import substitution. BIS certification is mandatory for supplying steel to several state-funded infrastructure, defence and public-sector projects. The certified products are manufactured at AM/NS India’s Hazira and Pune facilities. Q&T steel is designed for high-strength applications including bridges, mining machinery, offshore structures and marine projects, while the Zn-Al-Mg products, based on Arcelor Mittal’s Optigal® technology, offer enhanced corrosion resistance and longer service life for roofing, railways, warehousing and industrial construction.
In Kolkata, the certifications could strengthen access to specialised steel for infrastructure, industrial construction, warehousing and engineering projects across eastern India. Greater domestic availability may also reduce dependence on imported grades for applications requiring higher strength or corrosion resistance. AM/NS India said it now holds 25 BIS licences, including three All India First Licences. Its steel has been used in projects including the Chenab Rail Bridge and naval platforms such as INS Surat, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Malvan.
