Almonds may improve post-exercise recovery, new study finds

Regular consumption of almonds may enhance post-exercise recovery, reducing muscle soreness and damage while improving performance, according to a recent study published in Current Developments in Nutrition. Funded by the Almond Board of California, the study highlights the potential benefits of almonds for active lifestyles.

Researchers conducted a randomized crossover trial involving 26 middle-aged participants who exercised one to four hours weekly. Participants consumed either two ounces of almonds or calorie-matched pretzels for eight weeks. They then performed a 30-minute downhill treadmill run to induce muscle damage, followed by continued daily intake of the designated snack for three days. Results showed that the almond group exhibited lower creatine kinase levels, indicating reduced muscle damage, and reported less pain during recovery compared to the control group.

The findings have sparked interest among Kolkata’s health-conscious population. Fitness enthusiasts in the city, known for its growing wellness industry, are likely to embrace almonds as a natural recovery aid. Nutritionists in Kolkata are advocating for almonds as an essential addition to diets for their nutrient density, including proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants. “Almonds are not just a snack; they’re a game-changer for active individuals,” said Dr. Rohini Patil, nutritionist. Experts suggest that incorporating almonds into daily routines could significantly enhance workout recovery and performance.
