Political activity has started picking up pace in Assam as preparations quietly gather momentum for the 2026 Assembly elections. In Nalbari district, the focus has now shifted to the newly formed Tihu Assembly constituency, where the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has openly staked its claim. The AGP, which is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, has urged that the Tihu seat be allotted to it under the alliance arrangement. Party central general secretary and ticket aspirant Dilip Kumar Das said the constituency rightfully belongs to the AGP in the spirit of the alliance.
Das said the party has a strong organisational base in the region. The Tihu constituency has been carved out from parts of the earlier Barama, Patacharkuchi and Dharmapur Assembly segments. Leaders elected from these areas in the past had gone on to serve as Cabinet ministers in the Assam government, he said.“I have been associated with the Asom Gana Parishad since its inception and have worked for the party for the last 25 years,” Das said. He added that if the party’s central leadership gives him the opportunity, he will continue to serve the people of Tihu.
Describing Tihu as a constituency rooted in regionalism and secular values, Das appealed to the BJP leadership to leave the seat for the AGP. He also said that voters in Tihu would see the party’s elephant symbol on the ballot paper in the upcoming election. On the other hand, BJP ticket aspirant Trinayan Barman has also been actively working in the constituency. Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has been visiting the area and interacting with local residents.
