Actor Akshay Kumar, who often faces criticism over his Canadian citizenship, has been granted Indian citizenship on the country’s 77th Independence Day.
Sharing the registration document, Akshay Kumar posted on X “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!”.
Akshay Kumar had earlier said that he was disappointed when people questioned his “love for the country”.
“India is everything to me… Everything I’ve achieved, everything I’ve achieved is from here. And I’m lucky to have the opportunity to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything…,” Mr Kumar News Chanel said in an interview.
He applied for Indian citizenship in 2019, however, the process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Kumar’s Canadian citizenship became a matter of controversy after his interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
“I never thought that I should change this passport but now yes, I have applied to change my passport and once I get the status of abandonment from Canada…” he said.
On the work front, Akshay Kumar’s “OMG” 2, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, hit the theatres last week.
