In a noteworthy development, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi revealed through a Facebook post that more than 2,000 types of wild orchids are now found in the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, bringing Assam to the attention of the world. With this accomplishment, it may overtake even government-sponsored parks like Singapore’s National Orchid Garden as the world’s largest natural orchid conservation center. MLA Akhil Gogoi wrote in the post, “Kaziranga Orchid Park protects around 2,000 wild orchids. In contrast, about 1,000 wild orchid species are officially conserved in Singapore’s National Orchid Garden. No private institution in the world is known to have more than that. According to this viewpoint, Kaziranga might be the biggest natural orchid reserve in the world.
The approximately 6-acre Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park is situated in the Golaghat district, close to Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. It was created to preserve the unique floral diversity of the area, particularly the numerous endangered orchids. As the globe struggles with biodiversity loss, Kaziranga is a powerful illustration of how local conservation initiatives may have a big worldwide influence. There are 24 terrestrial species (which grow on the ground) and 46 epiphytic species (which grow on trees) in the collection. Rare and endemic species including Phalaenopsis mannii, Acanthophippium sylhetense, Eulophia kamarupa, and Aerides odorata are among them.
