AJP Seeks Fast-Track Court in Zubeen Garg Case

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has accused the judicial system of deliberately delaying the case regarding the death of Zubeen Garg and has called for the establishment of a fast-track court to expedite the proceedings. The party’s leadership, including president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan, expressed their discontent with the slow pace of the trial and the government’s apparent neglect towards delivering justice. They articulated concern over the government’s failure to take necessary measures to uphold public trust in the judicial process, stressing that demands for transferring the case to a fast-track court have not been met, which they view as an insincere approach to justice.

Amid the recent court hearings, it was disclosed that if the current rate of progress continues, the case could take over two decades to resolve. This acknowledgment points to a systemic administrative failure, especially concerning a person many regard as a cultural icon. On January 24, Zubeen Garg’s family members, including Garima Saikia Garg, Palmi Borthakur, and Manoj Borthakur, reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent intervention. They requested the formation of a special court in Assam to ensure a swift trial and also suggested that diplomatic and legal actions be undertaken in Singapore due to international elements related to the case; however, they reported no response from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The AJP raised critical questions regarding the government’s hesitation to create a fast-track court, the lack of necessary actions for timely legal resolution, and the perceived influence behind the delays. They demanded clarification from the Chief Minister about the neglect of the family’s constitutional rights. Furthermore, the leaders emphasized that seeking justice for Zubeen Garg transcends political interests, asserting it as a fundamental right. They are pressing for an immediate establishment of a fast-track court, a definitive timeline for the trial, and transparent judicial proceedings. The AJP also called upon the central government to take appropriate actions respecting public sentiment for the people of Assam. They warned of initiating peaceful protests if the current delays and negligence persist, framing their struggle as not only about one family but about the dignity and self-respect of the broader community, maintaining that any compromise on the matter of justice would be unacceptable.
