AIUDF MLAs Support NDA in Rajya Sabha elections in India; Controversy Over Himanta Biswa Sarma’s ‘Conditions’

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ignited a political controversy by stating that his government has “no enmity” with Miya Muslims if they comply with specific conditions, generating fervent discussion ahead of upcoming elections. Sarma emphasized that the government welcomes individuals who show respect and affection for the country. He outlined conditions for acceptance, including raising slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” singing “Vande Mataram,” and ceasing practices associated with “love jihad,” “land jihad,” and “fertilizer jihad,” as well as ending illegal land encroachment, child marriage, and polygamy.

This shift in Sarma’s tone is particularly significant given his previous criticisms of Miya Muslims, which had labeled them as “outsiders.” Observers suggest that this change may stem from increasing political competition as Assembly elections approach, signaling a possible strategy for the ruling party to broaden its electoral appeal beyond traditional Assamese voters.

Compounding the political dynamics, three legislators from the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have publicly supported the NDA candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections, raising questions about a potential alliance between the BJP and AIUDF despite their apparent rivalry. The BJP has often accused AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal of representing Miya interests and warned voters of the implications of not supporting them in past elections. The Congress party has accused these AIUDF legislators of acting as “agents” for the ruling party, echoing similar concerns from past electoral events.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Sarma hinted that these AIUDF members may soon join the Asom Gana Parishad, a BJP ally, as they are expected to formalize their connection with the party shortly. The AIUDF responded by stating that the aforementioned legislators were suspended from the party, asserting that their future political actions would be personal decisions. These developments have raised critical discourse in Assam regarding the strategic intentions behind political statements and alliances as the state braces for the forthcoming electoral battles.
