Air India names Boeing 777 ‘Sikkim’ to mark 50th statehood day

Air India has honoured Sikkim by naming one of its Boeing 777-300 aircraft ‘Sikkim’. The move by India’s national carrier is being hailed as a celebration of diversity and unity, especially as it coincides with the 50th Statehood Day of Sikkim. The newly christened aircraft, emblazoned with the name ‘Sikkim’ in bold letters near its nose, is not just a mode of transport;  it is a flying tribute to the spirit of the Indian Union. For the people of Sikkim, this act has stirred deep emotions, as their small but vibrant state finds a place of honor in the skies and in the hearts of millions.

“This is not just a plane. It is recognition. It is respect. It is identity,” said Karma Bhutia, a retired schoolteacher in Gangtok, as news spread of the tribute. “For decades, we have quietly contributed to the nation in our own way. Today, the nation has acknowledged us.” The naming comes at a significant time as Sikkim celebrated 50 years of joining the Indian Union. Since its official merger in 1975, the state has evolved into a model of ecological sustainability, education, and social harmony. The Air India tribute thus arrives as a golden anniversary gift, symbolizing national integration and unity in diversity.

In a country as vast and varied as India, where each state offers its own unique language, landscape, and traditions, gestures like these play a key role in nurturing a sense of shared identity. The naming of aircraft after Indian states is not new; Air India has previously honored states like Kerala, Punjab, and Gujarat  but for Sikkim, this is particularly meaningful.
