ll India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati has reached a significant milestone by becoming the first institution in the Northeast to be accredited as an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provider centre. This important development was marked by the institute’s inaugural ATLS provider course held from December 12 to 14, which signifies a new era in structured trauma education for the region. The event was attended by Prof. MC Mishra, chair of ATLS India and former director of AIIMS, New Delhi, who commemorated the occasion. The course saw participation from eminent ATLS faculty from across the country, whose expertise contributed significantly to the initiative.
The accreditation is a notable advancement in promoting standardized trauma management principles, particularly emphasizing timely intervention within the “golden hour” — a critical period for improving trauma survival and outcomes. Each ATLS course at AIIMS Guwahati accommodates 16 delegates and adheres to a rigorous training program that spans two days of intensive hands-on and theoretical sessions, culminating in a formal assessment on the third day, in strict accordance with ATLS guidelines. AIIMS Guwahati’s actions reflect its dedication to enhancing trauma care capabilities in the Northeast, aiming for sustained ATLS training that will foster improved emergency responses, better patient outcomes, and a reduction in trauma-related mortality rates across the region.
