Assam Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia has criticized recent comments made by Rejaul Karim Sarkar, a former All Assam Minority Students’ Union president and new Congress member, labeling them as “inappropriate and damaging” just ahead of the elections. In a letter to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, Saikia expressed concern that Sarkar’s remarks about redistributing areas like Sivasagar and Dhubri could provoke controversy throughout the state, potentially being exploited by media and social media to cast the Congress party in a negative light.
Saikia highlighted the unique historical, cultural, and regional identities of Sivasagar, Dhubri, Barak, and Tinsukia, warning that comments diminishing this distinctiveness could harm the party’s electoral chances in Upper Assam, particularly with elections approaching in less than two months. He recalled the sacrifices made by his family in support of the Congress during the Assam Movement, stressing the importance of adhering to the party’s core values and principles.
Furthermore, he urged party leadership to be vigilant and consult with senior leaders before recruiting individuals with potentially contentious backgrounds to prevent damaging the party’s reputation. Copies of his letter were also distributed to senior APCC members, including Pradyut Bordoloi, Rakibul Hussain, Bhupen Borah, and Ripun Bora, underscoring the urgency of the matter as the party prepares for the upcoming electoral challenge.
