Debi Daimiri, a 28-year-old wrestler from Dineshpur village in Assam, exemplifies resilience and determination in sports despite her challenging past. Orphaned at age seven, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, taking on odd jobs to support her wrestling training. Her hard work culminated in winning a silver medal in the women’s 62kg category at the Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh. Debi began wrestling in 2022 at the Khelo India Centre after switching from powerlifting and arm wrestling, thanks to encouragement from coach Anustup Narah, who assisted her in finding a job to afford training costs.
Balancing work and training, she initially earned Rs 2500 per month at Easy Bazaar, then increased her income to Rs 7000 at Bon Villa Resort. Despite limited practice time, her commitment paid off as she qualified for the Senior State Championships within the same year. Debi married in 2025 and attributes part of her success to the support of her husband and in-laws. She is now focused on winning medals at the senior level and aspiring for international competition, driven by her relentless work ethic and the backing of her coach and family. The Khelo India Tribal Games is a government initiative aimed at promoting sports within tribal communities in India.
