After 1 lakh jobs, Assam targets 1.6 lakh government appointments

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced a massive recruitment drive scheduled for October 10, through which 40,000 youths will be appointed across various government departments. The announcement was made during a ceremonial function in Guwahati, where 481 newly recruited candidates received their appointment letters in sectors such as veterinary, tourism, and education. Among them were 443 Veterinary Field Assistants, 12 Tourism Development Officers, 23 lecturers for District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET), and 3 Assistant Directors for the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). “This is part of our continued mission. After fulfilling our earlier promise of one lakh government appointments, we are now marching toward the next milestone of 1.60 lakh jobs. These recruitments will be completed by October 10 through a transparent, merit-based process,” said the Chief Minister.

Sarma placed particular emphasis on revitalising Assam’s animal husbandry and rural economy, areas he described as underutilised despite the state’s natural potential. Highlighting Assam’s overdependence on imports for dairy and poultry products, he unveiled the state’s collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to set up North East Dairy and Foods Limited. This new entity aims to process 10 lakh litres of milk per day, supported by upcoming high-capacity processing plants in Dhemaji, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Cachar, and Guwahati. Additionally, dairy giant AMUL is establishing a new facility at Rani. The Chief Minister also encouraged entrepreneurship in poultry and duck farming. “We are importing most of our eggs today. If 1,000 entrepreneurs take initiative, Assam can produce one crore eggs every day within three years,” he said.

Further promoting sustainable rural industry, Sarma highlighted plans to generate biogas and bio-CNG from cattle dung, and urged support for local pork production, which could reduce meat imports and generate local employment. Addressing the tourism sector, he urged the new appointees to explore Assam’s vast tourism potential and cited the increasing popularity of Kaziranga National Park, which now ranks third nationally in tourist footfall.
