Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand and leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), visited Guwahati to garner support from Assam’s tea tribe and Adivasi communities in preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections. He spoke at a rally in Biswanath district under the slogan “Abua Dishum, Abua Raj” (Our Land, Our Rule), calling for enhanced land rights, greater political representation, and empowerment of indigenous groups. The rally attracted thousands of attendees, including tea garden workers and community leaders, and featured traditional cultural performances.
During his speech, Soren addressed the challenges faced by tea garden workers, citing low wages, lack of educational access, and inadequate healthcare despite their significant contribution to the economy. He criticized the Assam government for not granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to tea tribe communities and highlighted the importance of “Abua Raj” as a vision for self-governance. Emphasizing solidarity among these communities, Soren urged attendees to unite for their rights.
Additionally, Soren attended a meeting with the newly formed Jai Bharat Party (JBP) and discussed potential electoral alliances for the upcoming elections. JBP’s president, Teharu Gour, expressed optimism about an alliance with JMM to contest in about 40 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, asserting that the collaboration could significantly impact government formation. Gour also criticized the state government’s handling of flooding crises, highlighting the need for better attention to smaller communities. However, he noted that no decisions regarding alliances with other parties have yet been made.
