A stash of ammunition was discovered in South Salmara-Mankachar, Assam, just before Independence Day

Just days ahead of Independence Day celebrations, Assam Police recovered a substantial cache of ammunition buried underground in the Kalabari area of South Salmara-Mankachar district. The recovery was made during an intensified security sweep launched across the district to prevent any untoward incident during the national celebrations. Acting on a credible intelligence input, a special police team conducted a search in the area on Wednesday. The operation was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Pratap Das, assisted by Officer-in-Charge of South Salmara Police Station, J.S. Khubung.

Police officials reported that during the course of the search, the team discovered ammunition carefully wrapped in polythene sheets and hidden beneath the soil. The seized items included 12 rounds of 7.6mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR) bullets, 3 rounds of .303 rifle ammunition, 3 rounds of 5.56mm INSAS bullets, and 7 rounds of 7.62mm AK-47 bullets.Investigators are now probing the origin of the ammunition and the identities of those who concealed it. While the police have not ruled out the possibility of militant links, they have stressed that all angles are being explored. “This recovery is significant as it comes at a time when the security grid is on high alert.

The timely action has averted potential threats to public safety during Independence Day,” a senior officer said. The discovery underscores the heightened security measures currently in place across Assam, particularly in sensitive districts bordering Bangladesh. With Independence Day approaching, security forces have been conducting continuous checks, patrols, and intelligence-driven raids to maintain peace and stability.
