68 Candidates Enter Fray for Aizawl Municipal Corporation Elections

A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, are in the fray for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. Polling for the 19-member AMC will be held on April 21, and votes will be counted on April 27. Mizoram State Election Commissioner Dr H Lalthlangliana said that none of the candidates withdrew their papers on the last date of withdrawal on Monday. He said that 68 candidates, comprising 40 males and 28 women from four major political parties, are in the fray for the upcoming AMC polls. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, while the BJP has nominated 11 candidates, he said. Over 2.37 lakh electors, including 1.28 lakh female voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the AMC polls. There are 19 wards under the municipal corporation, and six of them are specifically reserved for women. In the last AMC polls held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority with 11 seats, followed by the ZPM with six, and the Congress with two.
