India’s G20 presidency is hosting the third Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting in Chennai from July 24-26, 2023. The meeting focuses on promoting cooperation for a disaster-resilient future and deliberating on the draft Communiqué.During the inaugural session, the welcome address was delivered by Kamal Kishore, Chairman of, the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group and Member Secretary, of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Mishra emphasized the importance of national and global efforts to reduce disaster risk effects. India’s G20 Sherpa Kant emphasized the unity and cooperation of G20 countries in addressing water and resource shortages caused by droughts. He emphasized the urgent need to prioritize disaster reduction in policies, focusing on climate change, urban development policies, and financial frameworks. Kant emphasized the need to accelerate disaster risk reduction policies, programs, and investments at all levels of government and society.
The meeting featured two side events on women-led community-based disaster response and capacity building, with an exhibition showcasing early warning solutions and monitoring’s effectiveness in natural disaster management. India’s G20 Presidency establishes a dedicated working group on Disaster Risk Reduction, demonstrating its commitment to global disaster and climate emergencies.
