The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) reports on child marriage that an average of 32 per cent of registered marriages in Assam are within the prohibited age. Also according to the 2019-21 survey, 11.7 percent of women aged 15-19 were already mothers or pregnant at the time of the survey.
The Assam chief minister said they have identified more than 8,000 people who married minor girls. Besides the 2,200 already arrested, action will be taken against 3,500 more, the chief minister said.
The accused men will be prosecuted under POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act).
The number of infected people is increasing every day in different districts of the state.
