2025 Turns the Tide for Guwahati Policing: Sharp Rise in Convictions, Fall in Backlogs

The year 2025 was a transformative period for Guwahati Police, with substantial improvements in law enforcement as evidenced by official statistics. The city saw a decrease in registered crime cases, with 5,786 incidents in 2025 compared to 7,412 in 2024 and 9,393 in 2023. This decline is attributed to intensified patrolling, quicker response times, and improved operational coordination. A notable aspect of 2025 was the drastic reduction in pending cases, bringing the backlog down from 35,396 in 2021 to 2,882 by year-end, with over 32,000 cases disposed of in the preceding four years. Investigative outcomes also saw significant advancements, with the charge sheet filing rate jumping to 68.34% in 2025 from 42.56% in 2024 and 19.13% in 2023. The overall conviction rate rose from 4% in 2021 to 28.5% in 2025, and under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, it reached an impressive 86.08%, positioning Assam prominently in the adoption of new criminal laws.

Property crimes diminished, evidenced by 1,854 reported cases. Notably, vehicle thefts fell to 553, with police recovering 267 vehicles, marking a recovery rate of 48.2%. In mobile phone theft incidents, 1,159 phones were recovered through the arrest of 203 suspects.Additionally, the police intensified operations against narcotics, documenting 406 cases under the NDPS Act and arresting 555 individuals with drug seizures valued at ₹28.86 crore. Cyber policing also showed improvements, with ₹6.28 crore recovered from cyber fraud cases, alongside 1,784 inquiries and public outreach initiatives.

Traffic management improved, as road accidents decreased to 1,026 in 2025 from 1,218 the previous year, and no incidents occurred on December 31, 2025, despite heavy traffic. Traffic law enforcement contributed to the collection of ₹50.21 crore in fines.Overall, 2025 was declared a pivotal year for urban policing in Guwahati, characterized by reduced crime rates, expedited justice processes, and enhanced public safety, thereby significantly boosting citizens’ confidence in the police force.
