Badungduppa Kalakendra, a notable theatre institution in Rampur, Goalpara, is celebrating its ongoing legacy with a special one-day edition of the ‘Under the Sal Tree’ theatre festival on December 15, following its Silver Jubilee last year. Established over 25 years ago by the late Sukracharya Rabha, the institution is known for its innovative physical theatre style, which emphasizes minimal dialogue and expressive body language, earning both national and international recognition. The festival, now in its 16th edition, traditionally features performances conducted in a natural setting without artificial enhancements, attracting thousands of visitors.
This year’s event will be a single-day occasion featuring three productions:
- “Ranjumuk,” a Rabha language play written by Madan Rabha, directed by Dhananjay Rabha, running for one hour and inaugurated by writer Dileep Chandan.
- “Edin Teu Ahibo,” an Assamese adaptation of ‘Waiting for Godot,’ directed by Anshuman Saikia, with a duration of 50 minutes.
- “Derh Inch Upar,” directed by Anup Hazarika and produced by BA (A Cultural Organisation), lasting 40 minutes, scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Managing director Madan Rabha expressed gratitude for the support of audiences and emphasized that Badungduppa is a community-centric initiative. He announced the intention to return in future years with renewed energy and fresh concepts after this modest celebration.
