Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is continuing to turn heads with his impressive performances in domestic cricket. The 15-year-old once again found himself in the spotlight during the Duleep Trophy after creating a new record with his batting.
Representing East Zone against Central Zone, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player in Duleep Trophy history to score a half-century. He was also given the responsibility of leading the side as stand-in captain following Ishan Kishan’s wrist injury.
The Rajasthan Royals youngster showed remarkable composure despite his age and played with the same attacking intent that has become a feature of his batting. He reached his fifty from only 42 balls, with three sixes and five fours.
Sooryavanshi continued to attack and looked on course for another memorable milestone before his innings ended at 92. He missed out on a century by just eight runs, but had already created history with his half-century.
The teenager reached the landmark at 15 years and 157 days, breaking a record that had stood for 57 years. Laxman Singh previously held the record after scoring a Duleep Trophy fifty at the age of 16 years and 23 days in 1969.
His latest performance further underlines the rapid rise of the young batter. His 92-run knock showed that he can handle the demands of senior domestic cricket, while his record-breaking fifty added another major achievement to his growing list.
Sooryavanshi had already made history earlier in the match by becoming the youngest-ever captain in Duleep Trophy history after being named East Zone’s stand-in skipper in Kishan’s absence.
