1,300 “Lachits” recreate the legacy of Lachit Borphukan by marching alongside Hengdang in Assam

In a powerful public display of Assamese pride and historical remembrance, a massive procession of 1,300 participants—each symbolically representing legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan—marched along the Sootea–Jamugurihat stretch on Monday. Carrying traditional hengdang (Ahom-era swords), the participants walked more than 10 kilometres, turning the entire route into a vibrant celebration of courage, culture, and collective memory. The march, organised on the occasion of Lachit Divas, drew widespread attention from locals who lined up along the highway to witness the spectacle. The event was coordinated by Kanyaka Bohumukhi Krishi Pam, which now aims to enter the feat into the Assam Book of Records for assembling the highest number of symbolic “Lachits” in a single march.

Chants of “Joy Ai Asom” echoed throughout the procession, as participants—dressed to resemble the revered general—held gleaming hengdang in their hands. One of the most captivating elements of the event was a large symbolic boat that moved along with the marchers, honouring the naval brilliance displayed by Lachit Borphukan during the historic Battle of Saraighat. Observers described the procession as both visually striking and emotionally stirring. The march highlighted Lachit’s leadership in 1671, when the Ahom army successfully thwarted the Mughal forces in one of the most decisive battles in Assamese history. The event served as a reminder of his strategic acumen, unmatched bravery, and the deep-rooted pride he instilled in generations of Assamese people.

Every year, November 24 is marked as Lachit Divas across Assam to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Ahom commander. The day is dedicated to celebrating Assamese unity, honouring ancestral sacrifices, and educating younger generations about Lachit’s contributions. Schools, cultural organisations, and community groups organise talks, exhibitions, and patriotic programs to recall his role in safeguarding Assam’s sovereignty.
