The Central Government has proposed an allocation of Rs 70 crore for the development of Dima Hasao district in the Union Budget for the financial year 2026–27, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Debolal Gorlosa, announced during a press conference held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan in Haflong.
Addressing the media, Gorlosa said the new allocation is part of continued efforts to improve infrastructure, connectivity, and basic services in the hill district, which has historically faced development challenges due to its difficult terrain and scattered population. He stated that the funds are expected to support ongoing works as well as new projects aimed at strengthening roads, public utilities, and institutional facilities.
Gorlosa noted that earlier Central support had already helped in solving several long-standing issues in the district. According to him, electricity problems in remote villages such as Chemkhar were addressed with the help of central funds, while financial support also ensured timely payment of salaries for workers engaged in water supply services. He said these interventions had improved the functioning of essential public services in remote areas.
Highlighting development works undertaken in recent years, the NCHAC chief said major projects have been implemented under the present government. He pointed out that student hostels were constructed with a central allocation of Rs 65 crore, providing improved accommodation facilities for students from remote areas who pursue education in towns. He also mentioned the establishment of a Bamboo Industrial Park at Mandardicha, built at an estimated cost of Rs 75 crore, which aims to promote bamboo-based industries and create employment opportunities for local youth.
Gorlosa expressed confidence that with sustained efforts over the next five to ten years, many of the remaining developmental challenges in Dima Hasao can be resolved. He said that continued cooperation between the Centre, the state government, and the autonomous council would be important for achieving long-term growth in the district.
Speaking on infrastructure connectivity, he said the long-delayed Silchar–Saurashtra East–West Corridor national highway project has now regained momentum after remaining stalled for several years. According to him, construction work has progressed steadily, and the project is expected to be inaugurated in March, which will significantly improve road connectivity and facilitate easier movement of goods and people across the region.
Responding to criticism from opposition parties, Gorlosa rejected allegations made by Congress leaders claiming that tribal lands had been taken away during the present government’s tenure. He described the allegations as baseless and said that earlier governments had themselves allocated large tracts of land to private companies. He added that the present administration is committed to safeguarding the interests of tribal communities while pursuing development projects.
The NCHAC chief also announced that new recruitment initiatives are being planned to strengthen the education sector in the district. He said that 100 teachers will soon be appointed in Middle English Schools, while 200 teachers will be recruited for Lower Primary Schools, which is expected to improve the teacher-student ratio and strengthen school education in rural areas.
