Seven killed, 16 injured as Rath touched overhead power lines in Tripura

Seven people, including two minors, were killed and 18 injured when a chariot caught fire during a Rath Yatra procession after it touched a high-tension wire at Kumarghat in Tripura’s Unokoti district on Wednesday evening.

The condition of six of the injured is said to be critical. They have been referred to Agartala Government Medical College.
The incident took place at Kumarghat area around 4:30 pm during the ‘Ulta Rath Yatra’ festival of Lord Jagannath.

The festival marks the return of the deities – Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath – to their sacred abode after a week of Rath Yatra.
During the festival, a large number of people enthusiastically pulled the ‘rath’ made of iron. During the procession, the ‘rath’ accidentally came into contact with a 133 KV overhead cable, police said.

Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed grief over the death.
He tweeted, “In a tragic accident at Kumarghat, several pilgrims lost their lives and several others were injured due to electrocution while pulling the ‘Ulta Rath’. I am deeply saddened by this incident. Deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Also, I wish the injured persons a speedy recovery. The state government stands by them in this difficult time,”.

Tripura Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy informed the State Assembly that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to visit the state on March 25 to inspect the ongoing projects.

Some new projects may also be launched by the minister during his visit to the North-East state. With regards to new projects in the pipeline, he said that survey works of three new railway projects that consist of 30 kilometres long Belonia (India) – Feni (Bangladesh), Dharmanagar (North district) – Pancharathal (North district), and Kailashahar (Unakoti district) Railway has been completed.

Another project is underway to link Dharmanagar in North Tripura with Belonia in the South district connecting Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, and certain parts of the West Tripura district. According to the ministers, all these ambitious projects are expected to be completed by the next financial year.

Tripura cops arrest Trinamool’s Saayoni after ‘Khela Hobe’ slogan

Trinamool Youth Congress president and Tollywood actor Saayoni Ghosh was arrested — and slapped with attemptto-murder charges, among others — by the Agartala police on Sunday, a day after she tweeted a video, in which she was heard saying “Khela Hobe”, the party’s slogan popularised before the Bengal assembly elections, while passing a rally addressed by Tripura CM Biplab Deb.
Coming days ahead of the November 25 Agartala Municipal Corporation polls, in which TMC is contesting all 51 wards, there were reports of violence against Trinamool workers, allegedly by BJP men, prompting a Trinamool delegation of MPs to seek an appointment with President Ram Nath Kovind and Union home minister Amit Shah, protesting against repeated attacks against them. A Trinamool team left for Delhi on Sunday night.

“During interrogation, we found her involvement with the case registered under Section 153, 153A, 307 and 120B of the IPC. So, we have arrested her. We shall produce her before the court on Monday,” the police said, adding that during interrogation, four more persons were found to be in the same vehicle as Ghosh on Saturday evening and police were trying to arrest them too.

Later on Saturday evening, a video of Ghosh had gone viral in which she was seen loudly shouting ‘Khela hobe (Game on)’ during a street corner meeting being addressed by BJP leader and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb at Ashram Chowmuhani in Agartala. Following this, a complaint was filed against her at the East Agartala police station.

The Supreme Court recently directed Tripura police to ensure that no political party is prevented from exercising their rights in accordance with the law for campaigning in a peaceful manner.

Police said some unidentified miscreants attacked a group of people who gathered near the police station during the questioning of Ghosh, but also claimed no one was injured. However TMC officials claimed the attackers were affiliated to the ruling BJP and their workers sustained severe injuries.

A survey across 11 states and two Union Territories across the Himalayan region in the country works on the issue of waste suggests that while most people were aware of the existence of plastic bag ban in their areas, most believe the ban has not succeeded.

The report published by Roshan Rai, Priyadarshinee Shrestha, and Rajendra P. Gurung, suggests that only 19 percent felt the ban was highly effective, while 82 percent of the respondents were aware of the existence of the plastic bag ban in their region.

In Bengal, plastic carry bags are banned in Darjeeling and the Sunderbans; While Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, and Uttarakhand have imposed a complete ban on plastic bags. Sikkim had started the banning of plastic in 1998.

“A new line of bags labeled biodegradable, compostable, and oxo-biodegradable contains more plastic. Their use was found to be more in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, and J&K. The survey revealed that thin plastic bags of less than 50 microns are widely found, with 52 percent of respondents indicating this. Single-use plastics, intended to be used only once and thrown away or recycled, like grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups still dominate in terms of presence.

Shopkeepers charging users extra for plastic bags could be a way to discourage their use, but 45 percent of respondents said there were no charges.
